Marketing analytics turns data into evidence for decisions. Reliable analysis starts with clear objectives, consistent definitions and trustworthy collection—not with a dashboard full of charts.
Learning outcomes #
- Translate business objectives into measurable KPIs.
- Describe events, parameters and conversions.
- Interpret traffic sources and campaign tags.
- Understand attribution limitations.
- Calculate and communicate core performance metrics.
Measurement workflow #
- State the business question and decision the analysis should support.
- Define the outcome, metric, numerator, denominator, time window and segments.
- Document event names, parameters, conversion rules and ownership.
- Validate implementation using test journeys and reconciliation checks.
- Analyze trends and segments, checking sample size, seasonality and data quality.
- Communicate findings, limitations and recommended next steps.
Core formulas #
- CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100%.
- Conversion rate = conversions ÷ stated eligible interactions × 100%.
- Average CPC = spend ÷ clicks.
- CPA = spend ÷ conversions.
- ROAS = attributed revenue or conversion value ÷ ad spend.
- Marketing ROI depends on the organization’s definition; a common form is (incremental profit attributable to marketing − marketing cost) ÷ marketing cost × 100%. State the definition and cost basis.
Reporting cautions #
Check time zones, currency, duplicate events, missing tags, consent effects, channel grouping and changes in tracking. Attribution assigns credit according to a model; it does not by itself prove that a channel caused the outcome. Use experiments or other causal methods when the decision requires incremental impact.
Practice task #
Create a simple report for a campaign with spend, impressions, clicks, conversions and conversion value. Calculate CTR, CPC, conversion rate, CPA and ROAS; identify at least two data-quality checks and one limitation.
