Email marketing uses email to communicate with people who can lawfully and appropriately receive the messages. A useful program prioritizes permission, relevance, reliable delivery and measurable outcomes over sending volume.
Learning outcomes #
- Explain permission-based list building and suppression.
- Segment audiences using relevant, reliable data.
- Design clear email content and calls to action.
- Understand automation and deliverability basics.
- Evaluate campaign performance responsibly.
Core topics #
- List quality: acquisition source, consent records, bounce handling, unsubscribes and complaint suppression.
- Segmentation: lifecycle stage, stated interests, recent actions and customer needs.
- Message design: useful subject line, clear sender identity, accessible layout, concise copy and one primary action.
- Automation: welcome series, onboarding, event follow-up and lifecycle messages with entry, exit and suppression rules.
- Deliverability: authentication, sender reputation, list hygiene and monitoring provider requirements.
- Testing: test a meaningful hypothesis, select a primary metric and avoid drawing conclusions from tiny samples.
Metrics and interpretation #
Track delivery, bounce, unsubscribe, complaint, click and conversion measures. Open rates can be affected by privacy protections and automated image loading, so they are not a reliable standalone measure of attention. Define the denominator for every rate and compare like with like.
Practice task #
Design a welcome sequence for a person who requests a guide. Define the consent check, entry trigger, message purpose, timing, exit conditions and success measure. Include what happens if the person unsubscribes or completes the target action early.
