Conversion funnel analysis examines the steps people take toward an outcome and measures how many progress through each stage. It helps teams locate drop-off, compare audience segments and prioritise investigation.
Map the Funnel #
A purchase funnel might include product-page view, add to cart, checkout start, payment attempt and completed purchase. A lead funnel might include landing-page visit, form start, form completion, qualification and sales acceptance. Choose stages that reflect the actual user journey.
Calculate Stage Conversion and Drop-Off #
Stage conversion rate = users or sessions reaching the next stage ÷ those entering the current stage × 100. Drop-off rate = 100% − stage conversion rate, when the same denominator and cohort definition are used.
Segment the Data #
Compare device, channel, campaign, new versus returning visitors, geography where appropriate and landing page. Validate sample sizes and tracking consistency before concluding that a segment performs better.
Diagnose, Do Not Guess #
Combine analytics with usability tests, customer feedback, error logs and privacy-conscious session evidence. A drop between checkout and payment could reflect unexpected fees, technical errors, missing payment options or simply a tracking defect.
Prioritise Improvements #
Estimate the business impact of each stage’s losses, investigate the likely cause and formulate a testable hypothesis. After a change, monitor downstream conversion and quality, not just the first step.
