# What Is Conversion Rate Optimization?

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is a structured, evidence-led process for increasing the proportion of eligible visitors who complete a desired action, such as making a purchase, requesting a quote, booking a call or subscribing.

## What Counts as a Conversion?

The conversion depends on the business goal. For an ecommerce site it may be a completed order; for a service business it may be a qualified enquiry; for a publisher it may be a newsletter sign-up. Define the event and denominator before calculating a rate.

## Why CRO Matters

CRO helps a business learn whether existing traffic can produce more valuable outcomes by reducing friction and improving relevance. It complements SEO, paid advertising, email and social media, but it does not replace attracting the right audience.

## The CRO Process

1. **Measure:** validate analytics and establish a baseline.
2. **Analyse:** identify funnel drop-off, device differences and page issues.
3. **Research:** use usability tests, feedback and privacy-conscious behaviour tools.
4. **Hypothesise:** state the observed problem, proposed change and expected effect.
5. **Prioritise:** compare potential impact, evidence, confidence and effort.
6. **Experiment:** test controlled changes when traffic and conditions allow.
7. **Evaluate:** consider uncertainty, business value and guardrail metrics.

## Conversion Rate Formula

**Conversion rate (%) = conversions ÷ eligible visitors or sessions × 100.** For example, 80 completed forms from 2,000 eligible sessions equals 4%. Always state whether the denominator is users, sessions or clicks.

## Common Areas to Investigate

- Landing-page relevance and clarity.
- Navigation and mobile usability.
- Page speed and accessibility.
- Form length, field errors and consent clarity.
- Trust evidence, pricing and next-step expectations.
- Checkout friction and technical errors.

## Tools and Evidence

Analytics can show where visitors drop out; interviews and usability tests help explain why. Heatmaps and session recordings can surface behavioural patterns, but must be configured for privacy and validated with other evidence.

## Important CRO Metrics

Monitor conversion rate, funnel-stage progression, form completion, qualified lead rate, revenue per visitor and relevant guardrails such as refunds or lead quality. A higher conversion rate is not automatically a win if downstream value falls.

## Common Mistakes

Avoid changing pages based only on opinions, testing too many variables without a plan, stopping tests when results temporarily look favourable, ignoring small sample sizes or claiming causal impact from a simple before-and-after comparison.

## Summary

CRO is continuous learning: measure the outcome, understand user friction, test a plausible improvement and evaluate both conversion and business quality. Keep every decision grounded in reliable data and user needs.
