# Website Speed and Performance

Website performance is the speed and responsiveness with which pages load and react. Slow experiences can interrupt research, form completion and checkout, especially on mobile networks. Performance should be measured on real pages and representative devices.

## What to Measure

Core Web Vitals include Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for loading performance, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for responsiveness and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability. Current “good” targets are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds and CLS at or below 0.1, evaluated at the 75th percentile of page visits.

## Common Causes of Slowness

- Oversized or uncompressed images and video.
- Render-blocking CSS and JavaScript.
- Excessive third-party tags, widgets or plugins.
- Slow server response and inefficient caching.
- Layout shifts caused by images, ads or embeds without reserved space.

## Improvement Process

1. Measure representative pages with field data and a lab tool.
2. Prioritise the largest user-visible bottleneck.
3. Resize and compress media; use modern formats when appropriate.
4. Reduce unnecessary scripts and defer non-critical work.
5. Use caching and a suitable content delivery network when useful.
6. Re-test after changes and monitor regressions.

## Marketing Impact

Performance supports a smoother user journey, but it does not guarantee higher rankings or conversions by itself. Evaluate speed alongside task completion, lead quality, revenue and acquisition cost.
