# Web Analytics Fundamentals

Web analytics is the systematic collection, measurement, analysis and reporting of website and digital experience data. It helps marketers understand how people arrive at a site, what they do, where they encounter friction and whether their visits lead to meaningful outcomes.

## What web analytics measures

- **Acquisition:** where visitors come from, including organic search, paid campaigns, referrals, email and direct visits.
- **Engagement:** pages and screens viewed, engaged sessions, interactions, scrolls and time-related signals.
- **Outcomes:** leads, purchases, sign-ups, downloads and other defined conversions.
- **Quality:** data completeness, consistency, consent status and whether events represent real user actions.

## How the process works

1. Define a business question and measurable objective.
2. Choose metrics and specify exactly how each will be calculated.
3. Implement tags and events, respecting consent and privacy requirements.
4. Validate collection using test visits and debugging tools.
5. Segment the data by channel, device, landing page, audience or campaign.
6. Interpret trends, investigate causes and test improvements.

## Key concepts

A **user** represents a measured visitor identity, while a **session** groups interactions within a visit according to the analytics platform's rules. An **event** records an action or occurrence. A **conversion** is a valuable event designated as an outcome. Definitions vary by platform and configuration, so comparisons require consistent settings.

## Example

A campaign brings 2,000 sessions to a product page and generates 60 completed enquiries. If those enquiries are valid and deduplicated, the session-based conversion rate is 60 ÷ 2,000 × 100 = 3%. The figure is useful only when the denominator and conversion definition are documented.

## Common mistakes

- Tracking page views but not business outcomes.
- Comparing metrics with different definitions or date ranges.
- Ignoring internal traffic, spam, consent restrictions or broken tags.
- Assuming attribution proves causation.
