# SEO Interview Questions

SEO interviews test both terminology and diagnostic thinking. Strong answers explain the principle, describe a practical check and acknowledge what the available evidence cannot prove.

## Core questions and answer cues

1. **What are crawling, indexing and ranking?** Explain discovery, processing/storage and result selection as distinct stages.
2. **What is search intent?** Describe the task behind a query and why the page must satisfy it.
3. **How do you conduct keyword research?** Combine audience questions, query data, intent, relevance and realistic competition.
4. **What belongs in on-page SEO?** Useful content, title, headings, descriptive links, images and a clear page purpose.
5. **What is a canonical URL?** Explain its role as a signal about preferred duplicate or similar URLs; it is not an absolute guarantee.
6. **What is an XML sitemap?** A discovery hint for eligible URLs, not a guarantee of indexing.
7. **How do robots.txt and noindex differ?** Robots.txt controls crawling; noindex is an indexing directive that must be accessible to be seen by the crawler.
8. **How do you evaluate backlinks?** Consider relevance, editorial context and natural acquisition; avoid buying links to manipulate rankings.
9. **How do you audit a traffic drop?** Validate analytics, compare date ranges and pages/queries, inspect indexing and releases, and check for seasonality or demand changes.
10. **Which SEO metrics matter?** Qualified organic clicks, query/page visibility and outcomes; rankings alone are incomplete.

## Scenario practice

A page is not indexed. Check URL accessibility, status code, robots directives, canonical, internal links, sitemap and content value, then use the relevant search engine inspection tools. Do not promise that a single fix will force indexing.

## Answer method

For troubleshooting, state the symptom, form competing hypotheses, identify evidence for each, prioritize checks and explain how you would validate the result. Avoid claiming that one ranking factor always determines position.
