# Open Rate, CTR and Conversion Rate

Email metrics help marketers understand whether messages are delivered, attract attention and lead to meaningful actions. Definitions differ by platform, so record each metric's numerator, denominator and tracking method before comparing campaigns.

## Open rate

**Open rate = Recorded opens ÷ Delivered emails × 100**, using the email platform's definitions. For example, 400 recorded opens from 2,000 delivered messages gives 20%. However, privacy features and automated image loading can distort open data; treat it as an imperfect indicator rather than proof that a person read the message.

## Click-through rate (CTR)

**CTR = Unique or total clicks ÷ Delivered emails × 100**, depending on the report's definition. If 100 unique recipients click from 2,000 delivered emails, unique CTR is 5%. State whether the measure uses unique recipients or total clicks.

## Click-to-open rate (CTOR)

**CTOR = Unique clickers ÷ Recorded unique openers × 100**, when both counts are available and consistently defined. Because open measurement can be unreliable, CTOR inherits that limitation and should not be interpreted in isolation.

## Conversion rate

**Conversion rate = Attributed conversions ÷ Defined eligible base × 100**. The base might be delivered emails, unique clickers or landing-page sessions. For example, 20 purchases from 500 unique clickers equals 4% click-to-purchase conversion rate.

## Interpret the funnel

- Weak delivery may point to list quality, authentication or provider issues.
- Low clicks may indicate poor relevance, unclear copy or a weak call to action.
- Clicks without conversions may indicate a mismatch between email promise and landing page, friction or tracking issues.
- High conversion with high complaints still requires investigation.

## Good reporting practice

Compare similar audiences, goals and time periods. Check tracking, bots and duplicate events where relevant. Do not compare metrics with different denominators as if they were identical.

## FAQs

### Which metric matters most?

The primary metric should match the campaign objective. For a sales campaign, reliable purchases and contribution may matter more than opens.

### What is a good email CTR?

There is no universal benchmark. Performance depends on industry, audience, offer, message type and measurement method.

## Conclusion

Use email metrics as a connected funnel, not isolated scores.
