# Marketing Plan Development

A marketing plan is an operational document that translates strategy into coordinated work. It defines the objectives, target audience, positioning, activities, resources, timing and measures used to deliver the strategy.

## Recommended plan structure

1. **Executive summary:** the priorities, opportunity and intended outcomes.
2. **Situation analysis:** audit findings, customer insight, competitors and market context.
3. **Objectives:** measurable targets, baselines and deadlines.
4. **Target audience and positioning:** priority segments, needs and value proposition.
5. **Strategic approach:** the choices that guide channel and campaign decisions.
6. **Activities:** campaigns, content, partnerships, sales enablement and customer experience work.
7. **Budget and resources:** costs, owners, tools, dependencies and contingency.
8. **Timeline:** milestones, launch dates and review points.
9. **Measurement:** KPIs, data sources, reporting cadence and decision rules.
10. **Risks:** assumptions, dependencies and mitigation plans.

## Build a workable plan

Prioritise activities by expected impact, confidence, cost and effort. Define one accountable owner for each deliverable. Ensure each activity has a reason, audience, call to action and measurement method. Include dependencies such as landing-page readiness, creative approvals, sales capacity and analytics implementation.

## Example

A quarterly plan to grow qualified leads could combine search content, a focused paid campaign and partner outreach. The plan should define lead qualification, budget per activity, delivery dates, CRM tracking and a review schedule—not simply list “SEO, ads and social media.”

## Review and adapt

Use a regular cadence to compare actual performance with targets, investigate material variance and document decisions. Preserve the original plan for accountability while recording approved changes. Update forecasts when evidence changes, and avoid overreacting to small samples or short-term volatility.

A good marketing plan is specific enough to execute and flexible enough to learn. It should be understandable to the people responsible for delivering it.
