# Marketing Metrics vs KPIs

A metric is a measured quantity. A key performance indicator (KPI) is a metric selected because it indicates progress toward an important objective. All KPIs are metrics, but not every metric deserves KPI status.

## Examples

- **Objective:** increase profitable online sales. Potential KPIs: revenue, contribution margin, purchase conversion rate and customer acquisition cost.
- **Objective:** generate qualified B2B leads. Potential KPIs: qualified leads, cost per qualified lead and lead-to-opportunity rate.
- **Objective:** improve retention. Potential KPIs: repeat-purchase rate, churn and customer lifetime value.

Impressions, page views, likes and clicks may be useful diagnostic metrics. They become meaningful when connected to the goal and interpreted with downstream quality and cost.

## How to select a KPI

1. State the objective and time horizon.
2. Choose a measure that reflects meaningful progress.
3. Define the formula, data source, owner and reporting frequency.
4. Set a target using a baseline and business constraints.
5. Add guardrail metrics to prevent harmful optimisation, such as lead quality or margin.

## Leading and lagging indicators

Leading indicators may signal future performance, such as qualified product demos booked. Lagging indicators record outcomes after they occur, such as revenue or retention. Use both when the leading measure has a defensible relationship to the outcome.

## Common mistakes

- Tracking too many KPIs, making priorities unclear.
- Using vanity metrics without a business link.
- Changing definitions between reporting periods.
- Setting targets without a baseline or capacity assessment.
- Rewarding a metric that can be improved while business results worsen.
