# Google Analytics 4 Fundamentals

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's analytics platform for measuring activity across websites and apps. Its measurement model is event-based: page views, clicks, purchases and other interactions are represented as events, with parameters adding context.

## Core components

- **Account and property:** organize access and the data collected for a business or measurement scope.
- **Web or app data stream:** the configured source that sends activity into a property.
- **Events:** records of user interactions or system occurrences.
- **Event parameters:** details such as page location, link URL, currency or item information.
- **Reports and Explorations:** standard views and flexible analysis for questions not answered by default reports.

## Setup workflow

1. Confirm the business objective and measurement plan.
2. Create or select the correct GA4 property and data stream.
3. Install the Google tag or configure the approved tag-management setup.
4. Review enhanced measurement and add custom events only where needed.
5. Configure important events as key events (the current GA4 term for important outcomes; older documentation may call them conversions).
6. Test event names, parameters, consent behaviour and duplicate firing before relying on reports.

## Reading reports

Acquisition reports help explain how traffic arrives. Engagement reports describe pages, screens and events. Monetization reports cover ecommerce revenue where the required event data is implemented. Explorations can examine paths, funnels, segments and cohorts. Report availability depends on permissions, data volume, retention settings and implementation.

## Validation checklist

- Check the correct property and stream are selected.
- Use DebugView or real-time reporting to test activity.
- Verify required parameters and event values.
- Check unwanted duplicate events and internal/test traffic.
- Document consent settings, filters, time zone and currency.

## Limitations and good practice

GA4 is not a complete record of every person or action: consent choices, browser restrictions, ad blockers, sampling or modelling, identity settings and implementation gaps can affect data. Avoid collecting personally identifiable or sensitive information in analytics fields. Use a documented measurement plan and validate changes after releases.
