# Goals and Conversion Tracking

Goals describe the outcomes a marketing programme is intended to achieve. Conversion tracking records when defined outcomes occur, allowing teams to evaluate campaign quality and optimise toward meaningful results rather than activity alone.

## Choose measurable outcomes

Examples include a completed purchase, a qualified enquiry, a booked appointment, a trial activation or a subscription renewal. Define the success condition, owner, value and source of truth. Separate primary conversions from supporting actions such as viewing a pricing page.

## Conversion tracking workflow

1. Map business objectives to measurable outcomes.
2. Write a measurement specification for each event, trigger, parameters and deduplication rules.
3. Implement tracking in the analytics platform and, where needed, advertising platforms or CRM.
4. Test successful, failed, repeated and cancelled actions.
5. Validate event counts against backend, ecommerce or CRM records.
6. Monitor tracking after site releases and campaign changes.

## Choosing the right trigger

For a lead form, track confirmed success rather than a button click. For ecommerce, use a completed transaction event and a stable transaction identifier to help prevent duplicate purchase counting. For phone or offline conversions, document how calls or CRM outcomes are imported and matched.

## Quality controls

- Check tags fire once per genuine outcome.
- Use consistent conversion definitions across reports.
- Verify currency, revenue and event parameters.
- Exclude test transactions and internal activity appropriately.
- Respect consent, privacy and platform policies.

## Common pitfalls

Counting page views as leads, firing conversion tags on failed submissions, importing the same conversion twice, and optimising toward low-quality leads can make performance look stronger than it is. Reconcile platform-reported conversions with qualified outcomes in the CRM or business system.
