# Digital Channel Selection

Digital channel selection is the process of choosing online channels that best support a defined marketing objective and audience. The right mix depends on customer intent, product type, sales cycle, resources, competition and the ability to measure outcomes.

## Common channel roles

- **SEO:** captures relevant organic discovery over time, especially where people search for answers or solutions.
- **Paid search:** reaches people expressing intent through search queries.
- **Social media:** supports discovery, community, distribution and paid audience reach.
- **Email:** nurtures opted-in audiences and supports retention and lifecycle communication.
- **Content marketing:** educates audiences, answers questions and supports evaluation.
- **Display and video:** can build awareness, explain complex offers and support retargeting where permitted.
- **Partners and creators:** extend reach or trust when audiences and incentives align.

## Selection framework

1. Define the objective: awareness, qualified leads, sales, activation or retention.
2. Describe the audience and where it seeks information or makes decisions.
3. Map the buying journey and the role each channel could play.
4. Estimate cost, reach, competition, time to impact and operational effort.
5. Check creative, landing-page, analytics and follow-up readiness.
6. Run a bounded test with success criteria and guardrails.
7. Scale, adjust or stop based on quality and business impact.

## Prioritisation

A practical scorecard can rate audience fit, objective fit, evidence of demand, cost, time to learn, team capability and measurement confidence. Weight criteria according to business priorities rather than choosing channels because they are popular.

## Common mistakes

Spreading a small budget across too many channels, choosing a channel without a conversion path, ignoring follow-up capacity, and optimising for cheap traffic rather than qualified outcomes can waste resources. Reassess the mix as evidence accumulates.
