# Conversion Rate and ROAS

Conversion rate measures how often a defined opportunity results in a desired action. Return on ad spend (ROAS) compares revenue attributed to advertising with the advertising spend. They answer different questions: conversion rate describes effectiveness at turning opportunities into outcomes, while ROAS describes attributed revenue relative to media cost.

## Formulas

- **Conversion rate:** conversions ÷ defined opportunities × 100%. The denominator may be sessions, users, clicks or leads—state which one.
- **ROAS:** attributed revenue ÷ advertising spend. A ratio of 4.0 means ₹4 in attributed revenue for every ₹1 of ad spend, under the chosen attribution rules.

## Example

A landing page receives 1,500 sessions and records 45 valid enquiries. Session-based conversion rate = 45 ÷ 1,500 × 100 = 3%. A separate ecommerce campaign spends ₹25,000 and reports ₹100,000 in attributed revenue. ROAS = ₹100,000 ÷ ₹25,000 = 4.0x (or 400%). These are separate examples and should not be combined into one funnel.

## Interpretation

Conversion rate may change because of traffic quality, offer, price, page speed, form friction or measurement defects. ROAS may be affected by average order value, discounts, returns, attribution windows and channel mix. Neither metric alone establishes profit.

## Good practice

- Define the conversion and denominator before calculating a rate.
- Use net or gross revenue consistently and document refunds and cancellations.
- Compare ROAS with margins, fulfilment costs and customer value.
- Validate purchase values and transaction deduplication.
- Segment by campaign, device, landing page and audience without over-interpreting small samples.
