# Conversion Lift and Experiment Evaluation

Conversion lift describes the change in conversion performance associated with an intervention. A strong evaluation distinguishes observed change from causal impact and considers uncertainty, implementation quality and downstream business results.

## Absolute and Relative Lift

**Absolute change** = variant conversion rate − control conversion rate, expressed in percentage points. **Relative lift (%)** = (variant rate − control rate) ÷ control rate × 100.

## Worked Example

If the control converts at 4.0% and the variant at 4.6%, the absolute increase is 0.6 percentage points. Relative lift is (4.6 − 4.0) ÷ 4.0 × 100 = 15%. This is an observed estimate; uncertainty and sample size still matter.

## Use a Control When Possible

Randomised controlled experiments help separate the effect of a change from seasonality, channel mix and other influences. Before-and-after comparisons can be useful for monitoring but do not, on their own, establish causation.

## Evaluate More Than the Primary Metric

Check guardrails such as lead quality, average order value, refunds, page errors and retention. Verify that the test ran correctly, assignment was balanced and tracking remained stable.

## Statistical and Commercial Significance

Interpret confidence intervals or other appropriate uncertainty estimates. Statistical significance does not guarantee meaningful business value, while a non-significant result may reflect insufficient data. Consider implementation cost, expected volume and long-term effects.

## Document the Decision

Record the hypothesis, design, dates, sample, metrics, results, limitations and decision. If shipping a winner, monitor the live implementation for regressions and confirm that the measured improvement persists.
